How AdAway Works ?
You need to root your device. If so this app work great on your device. Why it is necessary to root ?.
This application uses the host file to block ads. Host file is the file that keeps list of mappings between hostnames and IP addresses. When an application request an advertisement to show that request is redirected to 127.0.0.1 which will return nothing or does nothing. There are options to run a web server to respond to blocked hostnames and to direct requests to the IP address of your choosing. You can download hosts files from the app but it is possible to use your own and to add certain sites to the white- and black-lists.
So AdAway requires root permission to access host file. The hosts files is located in /system which is normally read-only.
